Hip-Hop/Soul/Electronica
The Artist
"The Seshen is a San Francisco Bay Area-based band that draws influences from an eclectic range of artists including Little Dragon, J. Dilla, Erykah Badu and Beach House. Their music fuses hip-hop, soul, pop and electronica, producing an original sound that is not bound to any particular genre."The Music
The Seshen truly isn't bound to any particular genre. I listened to some of the songs uploaded to their SoundCloud and each song is so inherently different from each other, that it's astounding to think they all came from the same artists. The versatility in this group is second to none. Their wide range of talent definitly intrigued me. I was once told by one of my high school teachers years ago that true intellect is being able to hold down a conversation with someone from multiple different degrees. To an extent, this may be true, but here is an example to explain that to those of you who are a little lost. Suppose, me (a non-music major) was to engage with Mirza Kopelman (the percussionist of The Seshen) in a heated conversation about ... well drums and percussions. You could judge my intellect by how well I am able to keep up with Mirza in this conversation. But, suppose I was then to have conversation with Mahesh Rao (the Keyboardist of The Seshen). Being able to hold down a coherent conversation with each member of the group would take a lot of skill since the members of The Sheshen have such an eclectic variety of skills and knowledge within the musical field.
Essentially, what I am trying to say (in probably another one of my long-winded ways) is that The Seshen requires your full attention. They create a collective of amazing music and their talent deserves to be heard. The Seshen take elements from multiple genres and compile them into rich full tracks. Their calmness of their music is great for lounging in a coffee shop while reading the paper and drinking a hot chocolate. From indie lo-fi to elements of hip-hop and soul, take in the greatness that is The Seshen and take a listen for yourself:
