The Artist
"Phantom West, the musical project from Los Angeles masterminded by Timothy Clark, has long found expression across multiple genres. From the dreamlike instrumental and electronic sounds of the 2005 album Chimaera, the noize/industrial/dance remixes of The Rain Expedition EP in 2006, the highly varied synth-pop, darkwave, and hard rock of 2007’s Aleph Null, and then the introspective, long-form ambient work on the 2009 album Aperture, Phantom West has never been constrained (for good and ill) to a single sonic template."
The Music
Vaporware has a 90's rock feel that gives way to a modern-esque electronic spin. A mixture of heavy guitar riffs and old school vocals makes for a great escape to the sort-of grunge rock of the 90's decade. Not only is Vaporware reminiscent of early 90's grunge/garage rock, but it also hints at a more modern electronic age. If you listen closely you can hear some elements of electronic distortions. The mixture of altern. rock with electronic production qualities only validates Clark's interest in many different genres.
I would have to say my favourite tune from the album is certainly a toss up between Ghost Ring: Under the Sodium Lamp or The Life of Perfect Creatures. I think that Ghost Ring: Under the Sodium Lamp has this really cool lo-fi aura to it which I really enjoy and The Life of perfect creatures really captures a more indie rock side of the album, but still keeping true to the 90's way-back. But as a final mention: Even though Clark and Phantom West use elements from a wide variety of musical genres, this does not take away from their creativity. In my opinion, it adds to the creativity to step out of the boundaries of a genre that so many artists are inhibited by.
