The Freeizm Album by Skream

Skream it Loud

An artist renowned for his dubstep talents. Oliver Jones (aka Skream) produced a free album (download here). Yes, a free album. It seems like a lot of artists are starting to make a free album. A lot of artists are trying to gain notoriety and sometimes a free album is just that little motivation to get people to listen to them, or at least get a preview of what's to come if you purchase their albums. Skream, an artist who has already established himself in the dubstep world, has produced a free album. An album that is not but merely a preview.  It is so much more. A vet producer creating even more dub for us to enjoy. Now that's a Christmas present. Time to bring in the new year.

An artist with loads of remixes, EP's, and a couple albums under his belt. Listen and listen good.

The Fall by Gorillaz

Download more from the Gorillaz
iPad Gets the Job Done

Goodness gracious! Gorillaz produce an entire album using just Ipad Apps.  Incredible. Technology is just amazing.

This ulterior cartoon ego has striked again and with a vengeance.  Determined to destroy contemporary perceptions in the music industry are the clever and creative Gorillaz.  Don't worry folks because they still have that eerie bass/synth sound like no other.  From the creators of Feel Good Inc. and Melancholy Hill comes the album entitled The Fall.  The latter to two successful and killer albums, The Fall hits with synth bass punches.

The Gorillaz have definitely strayed from musical traditions and pushed the boundaries of Apple technologies.  Apple, being the innovators that they are, have proven themselves once again and that's all thanks to the Gorillaz. So dabs to them for being able to showcase their talents in such an untraditional and creative way.

Killer Dub

Courtesy of DubsUPHoesDOWN (all you YouTubers need to subscribe) comes another killer track.

Just this awesome dub track I came across today.  I'm going to go a little philosophical on you today.  Here goes.

Premise: If you don't listen to this or haven't listened to this, then you have not lived your life.

Conclusion: Therefore, you are pathetic and should reconsider your options.
Perhaps, a nice long look at yourself in the mirror will suffice.  You know those moments in the movies when the protagonist looks at himself/herself in the mirror and has some sort of an epiphany and realizes that they need to change something about themselves.  Well, that's the moment you should have.  Take a shower, then put on this track to get you pumped while you get ready to GET OUT OF THE HOUSE (there's some not so subliminal messaging for ya).  Leave the filth for dubstep.  You first-time dubbers out there need to work your way up to handle a lot of dub in one day.  It takes time, but don't get discouraged because that's time worth spending.  Time is money, so invest a little of your money into some dub and support Crossman & Phizicist because this song is definitely worth some attention.

Crossman Dubstep and Phizicist unite in a killer track that'll knock your socks off ... then back on (it is cold up here in Canada, don't want them feet to freeze).

Yop, there it is.  Enjoy folks.

A Christmas Special: Deadmau5 & Daft Punk

For those of you who are actually online on this very day, OMR has put together a special post to commemorate the holiday season just for you to enjoy.  Now featuring Deadmau5 and Daft Punk.  Two of my favourite heavy hitters in the electro/house world with two brand new albums which were both released recently. So for those of you who are reading this, have a safe holiday and a Merry Christmas.  For those of you who do not celebrate Christmas, whatever it is that you celebrate, we wish you a happy holiday and all the best.  Don't drink and drive ... that's not safe.  Plus, if you're my our readers which you are, then you are officially better than that.

The Mau5
Sounds like: Daft Punk

To celebrate Christmas 2010, we at OMR are giving you part 1 of a Christmas special.  Deadmau5.

The Canadian electro-house progressive DJ has done it all from winning a Canadian Juno award to having his own app in the iTunes app store and being in DJ Hero 2.  Originating from Niagara Falls, Joel Zimmerman (aka Deadmau5) is at it again.

The cat's out the bag folks and the new Deadmau5 is out.  Deadmau5's new LP officially in stores and what an album it is.  South Park killed it last season with the Coon and Friends.  Remember when Cthulhu kills Bieber.  Of course you do.  Looks like our friendly monster and ally is officially taken a break with Cthulhu Sleeps.  Warning: Mysterion might actually die (for good) from listening to this song.

Oh my god! They killed ... Mysterion?

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Sounds like: Deadmau5

Well, the highly anticipated film release of TRON Legacy sparked the accompanying release of Daft Punk's solely completed soundtrack to the movie.  Yes, every song on the movie's soundtrack was written and produced by Daft Punk.  They even get to be in the movie.  By the way, the movie was unreal.  Saw it in IMAX 3D and it was well worth the extra few bucks for a little depth.  Sure beats streaming it online.

From the creators of many greats, Daft Punk presents us with a fiasco of orchestral synth.  Deadmau5 says 4x4=12, but on this scale of greatness Daft Punk gets an additional 10 just for changing the pace up.  The TRON Legacy soundtrack is absolutely unbelievable.  This well-crafted piece of art is the quintessential soundtrack album.  It hits where it hurts ... right in the liver.  Just like Bas Rutten.  To top it all off, TRON Legacy got pretty good reviews which adds additional attention to Daft Punk for their masterpiece.  The Mona Lisa of orchestral synth records, since it is the first of it's time.  No one has done anything like this, so dabs for Daft Punk being first to the finish line (note: it may have been done before, I just haven't heard anything like it personally ... maybe some similar stuff was in The Matrix ... I don't know though).  I would expect Light Bike (iTunes app) to get a lot of attention after this one.  In my opinion, this tops even the Star Wars orchestral musicals.
"It's like an hour long symphony that you can't help but be addicted to."

Happy Holidays everyone!  We wish you all the best in the new year and enjoy the tune times.

Wonkap Dubstep

Wonkap Dubstep on Soundcloud
Brujsteppin Hard!

Wow.  Wonkap is at it again releasing only a clip of what is another addition to the amazing genre that is dubstep.  Not only is this a killer clip, but it is up there on my top dub tunes 2010.  It's hitting harder than Babe Ruth cracking a homer.  You know, Babe Ruth was known for leading the league with the most homers, and yet he still led the league in most strikeouts.  I call that the Babe Ruth Rule (or BRR for short).  Go big or go home fellas.

That is exactly what Wonkap is up to this time around.  So for those of you who need their dub fix for the day, look no further.  That needle is going right into your arm for a reason.  That reason is as follows: Dubstep is an addiction.  Note to all those bass addicts out there, there is no cure.  There is no substitute.  Nicotine patches won't work for this kind of addiction.  There is no way out of it.  Once you've caught the dub, there is no going back.

Wonkap is a testament to the greatness that is dubstep 2010.  Beware, this clip might get you hooked.  But only in the best way possible because bass is a lifestyle worth living.  So eat it up and enjoy this clip.  Look out for more Wonkap in the future.

Chill
Sounds like: Urban Cone, Casxio

Chill beats are something that I don't take lightly. Sometimes I'm too picky with what I'm listening to and that means not a lot of new comers can make it into my "chill" playlist... Except this one.

The lone ranger of Of Oceans is known as Peter Bosch. Hometown of Detroit, Michigan I can only describe his music as electro-ambient. It's very natural like constant flowing water.. kinda like oceans.

He has a self titled EP that he recently released this month and his album "Big Mind" came out in the summer sometime around July. If you haven't already heard of them, give them a try for you non-ambient electro lovers.

That's from his self-titled EP that you should definitely look into.

Postdata (Self-Titled)

All Eyes are on Paul Murphy
Sounds like: Joel Plaskett, Contrived

Wintersleep's very own Paul Murphy (guitar/vocals) and his brother began a small side project to give a gift to their mom.  They labelled themselves as Postdata.

Postdata has managed to create a lushly-crafted album full of melancholy and despondent sounds.  Their calm, sensitivity sparkles.  Postdata, a stray from Wintersleep, into the abyss that is contemporary acoustic artistry mixed with calming vocals.

Their sound is very reminiscent of a long drive during a light rainfall, with the radio on low and the kids sleeping in the back seat of the car.  That's what it reminds me of.  Except I'm the kid sleeping in the back.  Either sleeping, or just listening to the radio, pondering about the many wonders of the world, while I lay my head on the headrest as I look out the window.  Time almost comes to a halt.  At that point in time, I get a vast look into the forestry that is the Canadian landscape.  Even growing up in the GTA, my family still managed to get out of the city.  If you live in Canada, you have to.

RootMusic BandPage by Sonic Entertainment Group

Childhood strikes again.  I guess my memories of my childhood consume me.  I remember them so vividly, but I don't think they are the memories that I want to remember.  Driving.  Always lots of driving.

I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I do.

Genres: Drumstep, Dubstep, Electronica

I came across xZert through JESUSdied4Dubstep YouTube channel and I can't get enough of it.  xZert is clever, no doubt about that.

xZert appears to just be starting out with only 3 tracks under his belt after 10 days (at this point in time).   But I think he is definitely onto something.  With not a lot of views, my goal is to change that, but I need your help.  Spread this to your friends and family.  Show some holiday spirit and give your gift of dub (if you're a true dub fan).  That's a dare.

Look out for xZert in the future because this is GOOD.  Besides, dubstep originated in the UK and that is exactly where xZert resides in, so big ups for yet another creative soul straight out of London.  If he keeps this up, his future will be a bright one.  Show your support for this lad because with a name like his and the talent he puts forth, how can you not?

I Feel So Alive! Dubstep Mix

Myspace
Clear!

That's a shock to the heart.  Be sure to check your surroundings cause this one will make you drop for sure.  Don't forget to call for help on your way down.  Give yourself some buffer time because the ambulance probably won't arrive for about 5 minutes (weather/traffic permitting, etc.) and that's if you call 911 emergency.   Hey, remember those first-aid lessons you were forced to take at your swimming lessons growing up.  Yeah, so apparently they will come in handy after a dose of this song.

Question: Why have I been posting dubstep lately?  I've hardly touched any of the indie rock stuff recently.  Hmm...

Alright, so back to dubstep.  The drop will put you in a coma.  Yada, yada, yada.  Dubstep is unreal. We get it.  Now listen.

Butch Clancy Dubstep

Grimey

Butch Clancy, a 26 year-old is "killin" it. Dub has found itself, made a name for itself, and can safely call itself a genre of music.  Yet, it is much more than just a genre.  It's a plethora of talented DJ's working hard and making crazy good music.  Music to my ears.  Music that makes me melt in my seat and cringe right when the bass hits.  Music that makes me no longer feel.  Music that take my innocence away.  Music that  is so conniving and so creative that it makes Dexter look soft.  No knife can cut this string of absolute greatness.  Dexter isn't holding the knife in this relationship.  Looks like my ears are at the sharp end of the stick. Yours are soon to be.  But before you hit the play button (which you probably already have), take a moment to reminisce of all the good dubstep songs that artists like Butch Clancy have brought us for 2010.

Season 5 of Dexter may be over now, but dubstep is just beginning.  And a whole new killer is on the scene of this crime.  He goes by the name of Butch, but you already knew that so enjoy.  Melt in your seat and let the music take control.  Literally.  The Beatles managed to sway half the world into an era of peace.  Dubstep will sway you into an era of electronica and filth.

Open by Chrispy Dubstep

Chrispy on iTunes
The Lion in the Jungle

Once you see that lion you know exactly what's coming next.  The predator of the dub world. The prey? Only the many dubbers who spend too much time with their ears strapped to a couple sub woofers (that would mean the listeners).  If anyone knows bass, it's Chrispy.  By that I mean, Chrispy is the lion in this jungle of bass. Once again, the metaphorical king rules and that's exactly what Chrispy does best.   He rules. Any questions? I didn't think so.

Dubbers get ready for another track (dubbers is short for dub lovers). The song is called Open.  As usual, Chrispy does a spot on job with another great song.  At only 19, he's accomplished so much and has brought the dub world to life alongside many other veteran dubbers.  He has surely been an innovator in this genre of music.  How does he do it?  If I could answer that, I wouldn't be writing about him.

Purchase Track on Beatport
Out of This World Good

From the most apparent brightest star know to the naked-eye, all the way to Andromeda and back is what is known as Excision & Datsik's collaborations. Alpha Centauri, their new remix together is definitely an  intergalactic experience.  Their last collaboration remix Swagga was huge.  Excision & Datsik should win a dub award at the Grammy's.  This track should definitely be apart of the soundtrack for the most recent version of Star Trek.  Sorry Spok, but your rationale just got trumped.  Say goodbye to logic because that is exactly what Alpha Centauri defies.  Hey Captain Kirk, we found a new commander and they go by the name of Excision & Datsik.

Noisia - Alpha Centauri (Excision & Datsik Remix) by NOISIA

Alright, so maybe Alpha Centauri is a just a song, but a song that does the impossible.  That's just how good it is.  The bass is deeper than the vastness of a black hole.  Actually, I can think of a better metaphor than that.  How about, the bass is so intense that E=MC^2 was just proven false.  Not even light can escape the density and gravitational force of a black hole.  Well, Alpha Centauri can.  Looks like Hawking was wrong.

Live long and prosper,

Sounds like: Super Mash Bros. Girl Talk

If you ask Kids & Explosions what his music is, he'll say "Kids & Explosions is a boy who makes songs by stealing other people's songs and making them worse". If you ask someone who hasn't heard of his music before, they'll say "It sounds like a Girl Talk wannabe". If you ask me what his music is, I'll say "One of the greatest mashup music groups I've ever listened to".

Josh Raskin (Kids & Explosions) has many talents apart from music. He is the director of the Oscar nominated short film "I Met The Walrus". Like his music, this movie is very powerful with an interview with John Lennon of The Beatles about peace, and the overall out look on the world. Check it out: http://www.imetthewalrus.com/.

Proclaimed poster child of the mash up genre, the new "Shit Computer" album shows us the potential of great music to come from this great artist from Toronto, Canada. I strongly suggest you take a look at his website: www.kidsandexplosions.com.

So this mash up includes artists and songs from Biggie Smalls, to David Bowie. There's just no way I can pin one or two songs as my favourite; they're all unique, and you'll enjoy the whole album.

Fade in and fade out.  From the makers of Sweet Disposition, comes Fader by the Temper Trap.  The Australian band is at it again with the release of Science of Fear EP.  There is no end to this band.  Fader is an instant classic in a contemporary modern world where singles seem to take over our playlists.  It is a very warming, heartfelt, upbeat, utopia of greatness.  No melancholy here. Just ... happy.  There's absolutely no way to fully express the gravity of their greatness and their musical talents.  Dougy Mandagi knows what's good because Fader is going to be all over the radio, if it's not already of course.  Perhaps the Temper Trap should come to Toronto so that I may see them live.  This is a must and I'm adding it to my bucket list right now. *Pause*

They That Cried Wolf

They That Cried Wolf - Click for Myspace
UK Indie Flow
Sounds like: Mogwai, Boards of Canada, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Kings of Leon

Much to my surprise, I have come across yet another delightful band hailing straight out of Yeovil, England.  Actually, many a great indie bands are from the UK so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised.  But nonetheless, They That Cried Wolf are a very talented group of young guys. When it comes to music, they what a good song should sound like. After all the music that I have siphoned through, They That Cried Wolf is definitely one of the better bands. Correction: one of the best bands. Ready for it?

They definitely have that indie-esque flow to them.  I think that if you can get a harmonically coherent guitar riff down, then you have just built the basis to a good song, regardless of the absence of lyrics.  Hell, classical music is beautiful and you don't hear any lyrics in Chopin's Nocturnes.  Hunters in the Snow (Part 1) definitely lays down that nice interlude-sounding simple, yet refined guitar riff.  It puts you in a state of happiness and content.  The sound of that song makes you reminisce about the good memories that you have had throughout your life.  It makes you think about the good times. You feel the music.

Lest not forget the vocals which we get a glimpse of in These Kids.  Indie rock is all similar, yet each artist brings to the table such a different mood through the undertone of their lyrics and the tone of their voice.  Its gratifying to listen to They That Cried Wolf because the guitar works so well with the vocals, let alone the percussions.

They That Cried Wolf - We're Like a Boat Without Paddles (Version 1) by Art Is Hard Records

I'm probably not the first to say that most indie (if not all) is similar in their own respects. I probably won't be the last to say so, but in all respect to indie rock (since I love it), each band still brings their own uniqueness that cannot be denied.  They That Cried Wolf does exactly that.  That is what is so intriguing.  How intricately embodied the works of a whole song are.  They flow and they work.  That is the beauty of indie.

My Name is Skrillex

Sonny Moore aka Skrillex

Sonny Moore is a very multifaceted individual.  I guess that's just a fancy way for saying he has many talents.  At only age 22, he has already accomplished so much.  Not only was he a singer/guitarist for the post-hardcore band From First to Last, but he has also moved over to the dubstep scene producing his own tracks.

From First to Last
Moore was lead singer for the band for two records including Dear Diary, My Teen Angst has a Body Count and Heroine.  Due to complications with his vocal chords, Moore decided to resign and start working on his solo career.

Skrillex
After a successful surgery, Moore began his work on his solo career.  And in comes the birth of Skrillex. Cue music.

Skrillex-Hey Sexy Lady by EKIM1406

Not only has, he managed to produce some of the best tracks in dubstep, but he has also released his debut EP for free (click for download).  On top of that, he released another EP just late October.  Here is a sample:

Foreward EP by Moving Mountains

Band Members
  • Gregory Dunn: Vocals and Guitar
  • Nicholas Pizzolato: Drums
  • Mitchell Lee: Bass
  • Frank Graniero: Vocals and Guitar
Music

An excerpt from their Myspace website explains how they approach their musical endeavors: "For some bands, there is a core vision and purpose that shines through from beginning to the end. For others, there is an evolution of an idea, a constant metamorphosis whose end and scope is unknown. For Moving Mountains, the evolution not only encapsulates their music, but a larger overarching concept of what defines ‘Moving Mountains’. That isn’t to say that the Purchase, NY quartet have an artier than thou complex, but it does touch on an evolving aesthetic undercurrent and a belief that a band can create an experiential vision that goes beyond music."

They also covered one of their favorite songs, "If I Should Fall Behind", by Bruce Springsteen. Sign-up for their mailing list and you can receive a free download here: If I Should Fall Behind Download.

They have also announced the production of a new album coming out sometime in 2011.  The are self-recording and self-producing their album just like they did with Foreward and Pneuma.  In the mean time, they are putting the finishing touches on their own recording studio being built in Greg and Frank's basement.

Tour Photos From January 6th-9th
Insight
"Moving Mountains craft a lushly-woven record full of power, emotion, and sincerity.  Combining guitar work not unlike Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky with the spacious hum of other-worldly keyboards and triumphant bursts of brass, Pneuma, beyond anything else, excites; in an indie-rock world regrettably chalk full of monotony and lifelessness, it is everything anyone could ever ask for."-  David Chong
This post-rock  is undoubtedly one of the most unique bands that I have come across.  They know music.  Plain and simple.  Theses guys are very dynamic as their songs range from downtempo experimental tones to borderline screaming.  They are extremely talented and can hit a wide variety of emotions.  They are absolutely astonishing.  This brings me to the lyrics.  The lyrics are very interesting.  Here's a sample taken from "With One's Heart in One's Mouth":
"When all is lost. You've got nothing more, nothing more to fear. Than me and lover's blood...Where the darkness grows from light and the waters flow like rivers from your chest..."
I don't quite fully understand what they all mean, but I'm sure there is a rhyme or reason as to why these lyrics were written.  That's just my insight.

Also, through my research, I have come across that Moving Mountains is compared mainly to The Appleseed Cast.  I though this was an interesting comparison, but spot on.
